Queer Writes

“We need joy as we need air.

We need love as we need water.

We need each other as we need the earth we share.”

— Maya Angelou

Gloriously Queer space for those who craft creativity, community, and chaos

Welcome, Gay!

We’ve been expecting you.

Been looking for community?
Wanna explore the depth of your creativity?
Did learning from ‘good’ writers get you running for the hills?

Guess what? Things are different.
You found us. You’re home now.

Queer Writes is the supportive space you’ve been looking for to write outside traditional standards made for people who don’t look or think like you. Now that we’re here, gone are the days of writing groups that mercilessly scoff at each other until everyone has a deeply unshakable inferiority complex. Here, we celebrate what’s different and choose to lean into our differences.

Writers tend to notice all sorts of things when reading something new. Some might appreciate how an author intricately layers subtle details to build a vibrantly complex world. Others might pay more attention to how an author breathes life into their characters by naturally weaving details about them into the narrative. There are dozens of elements that come together to make something compelling, and we’ll all pay attention to different ones.

Since anyone at Queer Writes can lead a session, the way we choose to get better is by sharing what we know and care about. We won’t dictate the ‘correct’ way to write something. Instead, we’ll share what we know about the aspects we appreciate and how these can with the overall narrative. We improve by working together to explore why we think something is compelling and how we can play around with it in our own writing.

As for what your final piece needs to look like? That part’s completely up to you.
All we do here is we get better together.
